We've all known for a while that the 1.9 Z3 shifter could be installed in an e21 to shorten up the throw, but as it turns out nearly all BMW shifters are interchangeable. Here's a lineup of the shortest ones. Remember the longer the shaft below the pivot, the shorter the throw. I assume the Z3 M one will hit the drive shaft on an e21, but the rest should probably work. I can't remember if our stock one has the bend in it or not.

variations in z shifters

  1. I will be attempting a conversion for at least my '82 323i. I've contacted the dealer and ordered the parts to go with the 2.8/3.0 Z3 version. I am constantly hitting the edge of my shifter shroud and would welcome a much shorter throw.

  2. the 'original' shifter i've now discovered was a stainless steel ball...the 'replacement' was plastic...i have 2 different shifter bars 151mm/121mm?....massive changes in both...i'm still unhappy with more try i think....
