how low can you go?

this blog is only a place where i have chosen to store pics, and information related to the restoration of my own 1977 e21. The restoration to stock is pretty straight forward and between the repair manual and the bimmerfourms there are plenty of helpful resources...however, the changes, upgrades, and customizations are what require research...this is an example of just that...this e21 has undergone what i assume was extensive suspension work...part of that included the lowering...i can't know what exactly took place BUT...for me, its just to low and i suspect this is what many describe as so low that it is performance effecting...

this is vic's car...vic is from russia and frequents this website...today, vic responded to this post by directing me to his e21...as you can see, there is a significant difference between a standard 'stock' stance e21 (above) and a lowered e21 (top)..there are a lot of considerations i am thinking about in regard to lowering my 320i...the condition of the roads is probably THE most important consideration, the overall geomotry of the suspension is another obvious consideration...(are adjustments possible?) those are the things i am considering and i'm sure you are too, good luck!...nice car vic!

Garage Envy!

one of the fourm members recently put epoxy down on his concrete garage floor...i put this product down on a concrete floor at the old house and it was wonderful to work with and it is not only cosmetically appealing but it is also TOUGH! very NICE.

Notice the white ceiling, light grey wall, broken with red, and darker grey, black trim and specked black, white, and grey flakes on the epoxy floor. Choosing coordinating colors is an art whether its the color of a car or the color of the garage walls and floor...CLASS!! very nice job.

I genuinely like ideas...even when they are not likely options...its good for the entire process of problem solving...ideas = good and this idea isn't terrible...not certain it practical however...

1949 Spohn-bodied Veritas BMW Cabriolet

Lee Hartung's Museum/Estate will have an auction by Auctions America by RM on Nov. 3-5, 2011 in Glenview, IL. Lee was a legendary collector and the collection has rare automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, police badges, toys, clocks...anything you can imagine to collect will be there!

This 1949 Spohn-bodied Veritas BMW cabriolet is not my favorite BMW...and this blog isn't titled "all things BMW" but automotive design has become so homogenized...its refreshing to see "new" ideas even when the ideas are old ones...this car echo's a 1937 Cord to me...just sayin'

This wild looking 1949 Spohn-bodied Veritas BMW cabriolet will be auctioned next month as part of the sell-off of Lee Roy Hartung estate collection in Chicago. The guy had some amazing stuff, including wild license plate collection. Instead of just one or two blurry Craigslist photos, the items are being auctioned off individually with really great photos of each item. This crazy machine is one of the stand-outs, and should bring a pretty penny when sold. 

The rear fins and center rear circle in the bumper are Spohn signatures, and bravo to BaT commenters below who also pegged it as a dead-ringer for the Buick LeSabre show car.

The triple-carb 6-cylinder engine in the Hartung car is similar to that of the BMW 327 cars of the same era.

Theres a few problems i encountered though... The carboard backing on the side that tucks under the weatherstripping needs to be trimmed like a full inch. The sunvisors are just short enough to miss a stock 8" mirror, however my 9 1/2" e30 mirror touches it when i fold them down. And also the sunvisor mounting tabs can only be screwed into one of the stock screw holes.

the photos above are a retro-fit of an early e30 sunvisors and headline panel installed in an e21, along with a e30/e12 rear view mirror with map lights wired to the dome light this e30 header has the electronic display which is NOT preferred

the color on this 320/6 is what makes this car attractive in my mind...i love the euro bumpers, but you can keep the dual headlights...

the rear of this car is clean, the euro bumpers, euro sheet metal, and naked trunk deck are exemplary of what this era bmw looks like at its best

The paint, trim and bbs rs wheels are the finishing touch that sets this car apart from the masses of 'daily drivers'...these characteristics are what take this car to 'show' class...

stance of a vw

the stance of this VW is enviable...but...not practical or likely to be pursued by me for the 77...the "re-mixed" euro look includes "streched" tires and lower suspension to the point of massive negative camber as illustrated below...i am leaning towards a euro 320 look...weber carburetors,  euro sheet metal rear valence, euro front and rear bumpers...
